Political office holders in the country have been enjoined to emulate the uncommon disposition of the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat by giving back to their alma maters.

This call was made by participants at the 80th anniversary celebration of Odu Abore Memorial Primary school, Mushin, Lagos, on Thursday, 10th February, 2022.

Dr Hamzat had made a glorious return to his alma mater and announced a donation of ICT centre to the school in commemoration of its 80th anniversary, a gesture that was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience.

Addressing the invited guests at the august occasion, Dr Hamzat, who revealed that ICT changed his life, went down memory lane recounting his year of enrolment at the school. While he admonished parents to be alive to their responsibilities, he also charged them to take the advantage of the free education in Lagos State to ensure that their school-age wards are supported to have quality education, while he appealed to the pupils to focus on their learnings.

“This is where I started in September, 1969 and I thank God. Let’s take care of these children, it’s only God that knows what they will become tomorrow. It’s our responsibility to take care of them, everybody says they’re the future leaders but if we don’t take care of them how can that be possible,” Hamzat posited.

Continuing, Dr Hamzat appreciated the patriotic effort of the school’s founder, late Mr. Iyalla, a Rivers State indigene.
“The person that started this school was from Rivers State, Mr. Iyalla; that shows that we’re all the same. How many Rivers State indigenes graduated from this school? I can’t remember of any. But I can still remember my classmates, the likes of Sunday Ajose, Hakeem Bamgbala and others, they are all Yorubas. Don’t let anybody divide us. Now, everyone has been donating to the school but what I intend to do is to build an ICT centre in this school because what changed my own life was ICT. By God’s grace, next week, the construction of the ICT will start.”

The Deputy Governor later went into a closed-door meeting with the head teacher, teachers and pupils of the school.

Odu Abore Memorial Primary School, Mushin, Lagos, was established on February 2, 1942 and Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat who was born and grew up in Mushin was one of the pupils that were enrolled in the school in 1969. After the successful completion of his elementary education at Odu Abore Memorial Primary School, the deputy governor attended other schools and institutions of higher learning among which were: Olivet Baptist High School, University of Ibadan where he graduated with a B.Sc. (Second Class Upper) in Agricultural Engineering in 1986 and M.Sc. in Crop Processing Engineering in 1988. Dr Hamzat later earned a Ph.D. in System Process Engineering from Cranfield University, England and was the first student in the department to complete his doctorate within three years. He is an alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Programme.
