Former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been found guilty of organ trafficking by a UK court.

The BBC reports that Ekweremadu and his wife have been convicted of bringing a 21-year-old man to the UK from Lagos to use his kidney for their daughter’s surgery.

The Nigerian politician, alongside his wife Beatrice and Dr. Obinna Obeta were also reportedly convicted of conspiring to exploit the man from Lagos for his kidney.

According to the BBC, prosecutors told the Old Bailey that the organ was to be removed and given to the couple’s daughter, Sonia, who’s 25 years old.

The victim who was taken to the UK from Lagos was meant to provide his kidney for the transplant worth about £80,000 at the Royal Free Hospital in London.
