Barrister Femi Martins, popularly referred to as BFM, is a legal practitioner of note, a political activist and core Lagosian. The popular Martins Street in Lagos Island was named after his family. As a bona fide member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state, BFM is the subsisting Legal Officer of the Mushin LG Chapter of the party. In this exclusive telephone interview with the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Naija News Direct, ‘TUNDE OGUNMOLA, Barrister Femi Martins shed some light on his desirous ambition and why he stands at a plum position of clinching his party’s ticket ahead of other aspirants. Excerpt:     Some aggrieved Lagosians have come out to say that core indigenes of Lagos are often being marginalized in the composition of government in the state, hence they approached a court to table their grievances. What’s your take on this? I believe everybody has a right to sue and anybody can be sued. It depends on the perspective you are taking your matter to court. I am a Lagosian, I believe anyone by birth or association or by being a Nigerian that resides in Lagos has equal right to be a Lagosian. Historically, we Lagosians are from Brazil, Senegal, Portugal etc, therefore, we can see that Lagos like America is a settlement for foreigners or travellers; we have core indigenes, they also have a right not to be deprived. I think their own issue is that “you cannot overlook us by bringing an outsiders to run our state without giving us any consideration.” If that had been the

Rasaq Ajala, Setting The Pace In Grassroots Governance in Nigeria***by Tunde Ogunmola – Naijanewsdirect

Local government is popularly referred to as grassroots government. It is commonly known as the closest government to the people. Viewed from this perspective, local government is a concrete reality to the people not an abstract entity that is detached from them. In view of this, it’s a government that should be able to feel, understand and respond to the needs and expectations of the people under its watch. In the contemporary Nigerian society, not only are the needs and expectations of people at the grassroots are not met, there’s also a sharp disconnect between the local people and many local government administrators in terms of accessibility, policy formulation and provision of services. However, in spite of these identified surmountable challenges, it is definitely not out of place to see some local government administrators in Nigeria who are models for their colleagues and have continued to exhibit good leadership traits and hearken to the yearnings of their people by providing dividends of democracy. One of such local government administrators whose encompassing style of grassroots governance has continually engender him to the people of his community is Hon. Rasaq Olusola Ajala, the Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area. Hon. Ajala’s ascension to the exalted seat of Odi-Olowo /Ojuwoye LCDA, in Mushin area of Lagos state, has brought integrated development to the highly industrialized council. He’s currently spending his second term in office as the Chairman of the Council. Broadly speaking, there are two functions that local governments perform. The first group of functions are those enshrined in the Fourth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution. The second group of functions are those that can aptly be described as civic and agency functions. These functions are: provision and maintenance of healthcare services, minor maintenance of state and federal roads, civic mobilization and sensitization etc. Talking about minor

Ganiyu Solomon at 62: A Distinctive Politician and Distinguished Nigerian! ***By Tunde Ogunmola – Naijanewsdirect

Distinguished Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon popularly called GOS in our political lexicon, turned 62 on December 19, 2021. The current of history has moved him down stream as an authentic leader. He remains a worthy example in leadership by virtue of recent happenings.   Senator GOS is always at ease with the people of one of the most disparaged communities in Lagos state, Mushin, his neighbourhood; as well as the people of the state of aquatic splendor. Listening to people and attending to their needs, for him, come with incomprehensible ease and overwhelming satisfaction, such that even years after office, he has continued to receive and attend to people in his palatial mansion in Magodo, when in practical terms, many of his ilk would have shut their doors against the people.   A shrewd politician but not the archetypal one, his unassuming nature, enhanced by quiet mien and his capacity to listen to people, no matter what they had to say, offered the kind of strength needed to deliver quality leadership. Senator GOS, a one time Mushin Local Government chairman has weathered the storm as far as politics is concerned in Nigeria. His knowledge of his people, coupled with his ability to manage the various unpredictable tendencies speaks volume of his staying relevance in Lagos political landscape.   Senator GOS involvement in politics is not a fluke. His late father, Alhaji Rafiu Ishola Solomon was politically influential in Lagos state and was a contemporary of the first civilian governor of Lagos state, late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande. Alhaji Rafiu Solomon, wielded enormous influence in Lagos political landscape to such an extent that he recommended people for political appointments. Prominent among such appointments was that of late Oba Alhaji Olatunji Hamzat, the father of Lagos state Deputy Governor, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat.   Alhaji Rafiu Solomon was instrumental to

After several minutes of deliberation, members of the Lagos4Lagos movement voted unanimously that they join the PDP, in order to actualise their dream of taking over the mantle of leadership in the state. They also agreed that the switch from APC to PDP should be officially conducted in another fortnight at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Marina axis. As gathered, the official decamping would occur eight days after PDP would have sworn in their National Working Committee (NWC) led by a senate former president, Iyorchia Ayu, and it would be one of the first major assignments to be undertaken by the chairman. It would be recalled that the movement had in October held a parallel state congress at the Airport hotel in Ikeja, but was not recognised by the party’s national leadership. At the congress, Sunday Ajayi, from Agege Local Government was elected as chairman of the APC faction that had consistently complained about imposition and non-inclusion of true sons of Lagos in APC activities. The group had vowed to challenge the system and offer new alternatives ahead of the 2023 general elections

“I Will Restore The Lost Glory of Lagos APC”, Says Fouad Oki; Pledges 300,000 Jobs For Party Members If Elected Chairman – Naijanewsdirect

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Mr. Fouad Oki has said the party in the state is bleeding profusely due to impunity and urgently in need of a surgical intervention to stop the bleeding and restore its lost glory.   Oki, a former Vice Chairman of the party and a chairmanship aspirant in the forthcoming state congress of the party, said if elected, he would immediately embark on a process to rehabilitate, reconstruct and more importantly all aggrieved members to the fold. Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Gazelle, Oki said every effort must be mustered to fight impunity and take the party to its preeminent status where it respects the rule of law and level playing field for all members.   “I aspire to lead our party for very obvious reasons. Today, our party is in comatose. Our party is bleeding and bleeding profusely too, and we must understand that our party requires a surgical procedure to take it back to its preeminent status of a progressive family. Our party needs very clearly today what I called the three “Rs’; a process of rehabilitation, a process of reconstruction and more importantly to bring together everyone that has been taken or shut out of the party’s window.   “The party today needs leadership with a new direction and that is all I offer – unity, unity and unity. Today, our party has not been this divided. Unfortunately, Lagos political system was founded on a progressive model which gives everybody a sense of inclusion. Unfortunately today, our party lacks that and that is what I am aspiring to do; to lead a party where no one would be left out or shut out; where unity would be the order of the day; where leadership born out of integrity and capacity would hold
