Opinion: Dogara’s Return To APC And Tinubu’s 2023 Presidential Ambition – Naijanewsdirect

News broke out on Friday evening that Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yabuku Dogara, has decamped from the main opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and returned to the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC).

The news broke out on Friday evening after Yakubu Dogara and APC Caretaker Committee Chairman, Governor Mai Buni of Yobe State, met with President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock.

The Chairman told statehouse journalists that the former speaker has returned to the ruling party.

Dogara and Senator Bukola Saraki dumped the ruling party in the build-up to the 2019 general election.

Both Saraki and Dogara radically became the speaker and Senate President of the 8th National Assembly against the decision of APC in 2015.

Tinubu and Dogara

Their administration was characterized by several crisis with the Executive before they finally dumped the ruling party is 2018.

Both leaders joined the People’s Democratic Party and contested as Honourable and Senator respectively. Only Dogara was able to return to the National Assembly but didn’t return as the speaker.

What could be the actual reason for the defection of the former speaker to the ruling party barely two years after he left?

First, his return might be connected to the rumored 2023 Presidential ambition of former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is said to be nursing the ambition to take over from President Muhammad Buhari in 2023.

The former governor is a Muslim from the Southern part of the country, for him to stand a chance of winning the election, he needs a Christian from the North as a running mate.

Dogara is the only formidable Christian politician from the North who fit into the position.

Neither Tinubu nor Dogara has spoken on this, but this is the political reality on the ground.

If Tinubu did not run for the Presidency, Dogara can still be the running mate for the Minister for Works, Babatunde Fashola, or any Muslim politician from the South.

The defection of the former speaker could also be connected to the Bauchi State Governorship Election in 2023.

Dogara is from the state and also eyeing the Governorship seat. The current Governor, Senator Bala Mohammad, is from the People’s Democratic Party and he is most likely to run for the second term in 2023.

Dogara can only become the Bauchi State Governor in 2023 under the platform of APC.

His defection can also be because he is trying to run from the probe or possibly political victimization.
